Dog Training Treats

{dog treats}Much can be learned from dog owners who train their dogs for agility competitions where Dog Training Treats are used extensively. As our dogs learn more, we should should not get stingy with our treats. We should continue to frequently reward them and give them a reason to love our tricks and games. While using treats, combine them with a positive command like "good boy" and a positive touch. Timing is crucial. You want your dog to associate the action or behavior you are teaching in the moment with a positive reward. Other forms of positive reinforcement must also be well time during training session. Affection, for example, should be limited to when your dog behaves as desired.

Liver Brownies
While providing your canine with delicious treats, you can also provide him with a healthy variety of his nutritional needs. Brownies make excellent training treats because they can be easily broken into small pieces. Liver is packed with nutrients: vitamin A, B, iron, zinc, and other trace minerals. Here are the ingredients you will need to cook 12 brownies: 1 lb beef livers, 3 tsp peanut butter, 2 cups whole wheat flour, 1 cup barley. Cooking instructions:

  1. Cook barley
  2. Preheat oven to 350F
  3. Puree livers and mix with peanut butter
  4. Mix flour and barley together. Then mix with liver peanut butter mixture.
  5. Pour into 9×9 inch pan and bake 20 minutes.
  6. Cool, cut into small pieces, refrigerate for 1 week.

Salmon & Parsley Treats
This delicious treat is wheat free, meat free, and packed with nutrition. The salmon is high in omega 3 acids and the parsley is a good source of vitamin K. Here are the ingredients to make 18 treats: 6 oz canned salmon (rinse & drain), 3 eggs, 2 cups rice flour, 1/ cup fresh parsley. Cooking instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350F
  2. Blend until doughy
  3. Roll til 1/4 inch thick. Cut into shapes and bake for 25 min.
  4. Keep for 2 weeks in frig.

When training our doggy companions to stop a bad behavior, positive reinforcement is the best approach in most situations. Punishment that is mistimed or severe can cause aggressive behavior. It slows down the training. Teaching a dog through rewards is much easier and less confrontational. In situations where treats don't work, one thing I have tried successfully is to give the pooch a time out, to "Lay Down", and "Stay", for a period of time.
